Romans 8:31 “…. If God is for us, who is against us?”
In Romans 8:31-39, we read of a love everlasting; Jesus is for us, forever. “But nothing about our Lord Jesus Christ has changed down to this very hour. His love has not changed. It hasn’t cooled off, and it needs no increase because He has already loved us with infinite love and there is no way that infinitude can be increased” (Tozer). At first reading of that quote, you may think that it is overly simple and known; however, it is profound at the same time!
A Testimony of God’s love from Jennifer Elroy,
“I can remember sitting in Romans class in Bible college years ago. I’d grown up in a broken home, did all the typical “rebellious teen” things with a bad crowd. I’d come to salvation through my best friend (whom I later married) and his pastor at the time (who later married us). I’d had a very challenging relationship with my father and I had only been a christian for a few years. I’d been at the very bottom emotionally and had felt so alone in my past.
The professor for Romans class came to Romans chapter 8:31-39. I can remember him reading it aloud to the class and declaring that if “God is for us, who can be against us?” and the truth that there is NOTHING that can separate us from the love of God. I can remember sitting there, with tears streaming down my face as he read the verses. Never in my life had I known a love like that; one that went before me, gave himself for me, pursued me and would NEVER change his mind about loving me. I’d never had that type of security in anyone before in my life. It was as if the whole world stopped around me and those words echoed in my head over and over again from verse 35. This was love everlasting!”
Salvation is all God! He saw our need while we were sinners, went before us in His sacrifice for us and as the Tozer quote states “will never love us less or more because He has (and continues to) love us with infinite love!” Praise be to God for His indescribable gift! Why wouldn’t we want to love Him, follow Him and serve Him all the days of our lives?
We are held in God’s hand as the Scripture says in John 10:28 & 29. Please do not read into this and believe then that we have a free license to do whatever we want; such is not the case in any way. When we start to fully grasp the infinite love of God and who we are, because of Christ… We should be overwhelmed with love in return and willing to follow Him. I heard a quote once along these lines that hasn’t left my mind. It basically states that “fear is what motivates the obedience of a slave but love engenders the obedience of sons.” We are to be motivated by love; the greatest of these!
We are told in Romans 8:37 that we “overwhelmingly conquer through Him who loved us”. It’s time you start seeing yourself as God does! What thing in your life do you need to look at from His paradigm and see yourself as a conqueror? Give that thing to Him, don’t try to take it back again! Walk in faith in what you know to be true and see Him work!
