There are few things as exciting as a marriage in this world. In my life, salvation was perhaps the greatest single event. This spiritual event changed not only the course of that day, but changed the course of my eternity. Our Salvation causes not only those on earth around us to rejoice, but heaven to rejoice as well! (Luke 15:7, 10) Next to salvation comes two amazing times in life. First was the marriage of my wife and I, second was the birth of my three sons. All of these events are exciting not only because they are dramatically life changing and emotional, but because they are both physical and spiritual. As Jennifer and I were married, we formed a covenant bond with God that we would become one flesh and serve Him together. The point of our marriage was not self-fulfillment or self-gratification. God placed us together as a couple that we might bring glory to God through our life together.

This beautiful picture of man and woman before God is not simply a man-made created cultural norm. It is much more beautiful than that. The marriage union is a picture of God’s relationship with mankind. There are no less than 24 times in Scripture where marriage relationship terms are used to describe the relationship of the Lord to mankind. God could have used so many other illustrations, but He chose this relationship. He created marriage not simply to meet Adam’s need for companionship, but that we would be reminded daily that we are His bride. Paul draws this conclusion in his letter to the church at Ephesus. “For this cause shall a man leave his father and mother, and shall be joined unto his wife, and they two shall be one flesh. This is a great mystery: but I speak concerning Christ and the church.” (verses 31-32)

Each person who is part of the body of Christ, the church, looks forward to that day when we will sit with Christ and celebrate the marriage of the Lamb. Perhaps we should take the time to ‘wrap our heads’ around this incredible time that is yet to come. “Let us be glad and rejoice, and give honour to Him: for the marriage of the Lamb is come, and his wife hath made herself ready. And to her was granted that she should be arrayed in the fine linen, clean and white: for the fine linen is the righteousness of the saints.” (Revelation 19:7-8)

These truths are discussed little in most theological books. The beauty of Christ coming for His bride is one of the most passionate moments in time except perhaps the cross itself. In this moment, thousands of years of struggle, groaning and pain end. In this moment we will find the sweetness of purity, passion and pleasure of worship in Him. In this moment, time will culminate and we will be in eternity forever with Him.

As we look at our lives in relationship to this moment, many things we see as important become minuscule. We must be focused on the worship of God now, and will be forevermore!
